The Black Star Free Lunch Program came to a close this week, marking the end of a bold and community-rooted initiative to support a high school student across the state of Maryland. While it began with a local focus, the program ultimately expanded its reach in the final hours—leading to a broader impact than originally imagined.
Initially launched as a raffle-based fundraiser to support a student in Calvert County, MD, the program shifted course in its final 24 hours. Black Star dropped the ticket price from $5 to $1 and opened participation to high school students across the entire state. The move was simple but powerful: give more students a chance to benefit from community generosity.
That last-day pivot led to an incredible response, and ultimately, a winner: Fernando U., a high school student from Baltimore, Maryland, who will receive a $200 award from Black Star to support his journey through the school year.
What started as a focused community effort evolved into a statewide show of support for youth empowerment—and a reminder that sometimes our greatest impact comes when we remain open to change.
We extend our heartfelt thanks to every individual who contributed to this initiative and helped spread the word. A special thank you goes to two of our partners in the Black Star Business Network—The Bureau of Creative Intelligence (BCI) and So You Graduated, Now What? (SYGNW)—whose sponsorship and support helped make this program possible.
As Black Star Journeys continues to roll out mission-driven programs across education, ownership, and innovation, this raffle stands as a testament to the power of adaptability, collaboration, and community.
